Gagosian Closes 980 Madison Location with a Blockbuster Picasso Show

Gagosian is about to end a chapter in its history, the end of its residence at the location 980 Madison and hosts an exhibition dedicated to Pablo Picasso.

In collaboration with the artist’s daughter Paloma Picasso, “Picasso: tête-à-tête” will open on April 18 and showcase more than 50 paintings, sculptures and paintings, spanning Picasso’s entire profession from 1896 to 1972. Nearly twelve of these works will be revoked in the public for the first private video, while also returning to the twelve after.

The exhibition marks the flagship store with Cagos’ flagship 980 Madison Avenue, which was first reported in 2023. The building was originally designed for the auction house, which was designed for the auction house, with 976 Parke-Bernet Madison Avenue facing the street space.

The 21st exhibition of the gallery is dedicated to Picasso’s property “Picasso: tête-à-tête”, which will be the 21st exhibition of Paloma and will be Paloma’s first major international exhibition since being appointed as the head of the Picasso government in 2023. (As proved last year, the appetite for Picasso’s good performance is unlimited. A few weeks later, on May 1, dealer Almine Rech will showcase “Pablo Picasso: Still Life” with Fundación Almine Y Bernard Y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso, who co-founded with her husband in 2002.

Gagosian’s exhibition draws inspiration from Picasso’s own curatorial approach. Records show that in his retrospective exhibition at Galerie Georges Petit in Paris in 1932, he avoided a strict chronology and instead had a dynamic dialogue between works of different periods and styles. “Picasso: tête-à-tête” follows this model, juxtaposing painting, sculpture and painting from his work to his work to elicit a new interpretation of the artist’s infinite creativity.

Gagosian will release a full catalog of illustration exhibitions that include conversations between Paloma and artist Peter Doig, who held the exhibition at 980 Madison Space last fall. The publication will also include a translation of an article by critic Eric Tériade on Picasso’s 1932 Paris installation, further linking the exhibition’s approach to it.

“I was delighted when Larry suggested we join in a major exhibition together,” Paloma said in a statement. “In the dialogue across subjects and periods, my father’s work was presented, which is a homage to his legacy. Many of the works we selected have never been seen because my father placed them in his studio and reunite with other important examples of collections would be a very special event.”
